Culture Vultures’ Night Out

Culture Vultures’ Night Out

So.  In London, there has been a long-standing venue called The Proms, musical performances in a variety of genres.  Haven’t made it to that, but we went to a performance last night of The Oxford Proms. It was held in the historic Sheldonian Theatre, a Christofer Wren listed building. Entering the space my first impression was, “Where’s the body?”  Could have been the scene of one of the paintings of an anatomy lesson presented to students (all male, of course!)…

Paula’s take on Cropredy

Paula’s take on Cropredy

Overall, wonderful experience.  Fun to watch the Brits let their hair down.  Much of that hair was grey and thinning but the younger generations were represented as well.  In fact, we met a 31 year old guy who has been at 29 Cropredy Festivals! Musically there was diversity.  Fairport Convention get labeled Folk Rock which is a term not in much use in the States as far as I know. (Open to corrections, though; so many years with my favorite…

It’s Paula! Surprising things English groceries are cheap and nice. Many more drinks options, zillions of cheeses, nice meats, decent produce and breads. Not big on organic options. Sleeping on a 4 ft wide bed is doable! Same length as at home (80″) But Andrew is on the inside, though. Hardware in hardware stores is lovely and nice quality. Things I don’t often see at home. More racial diversity than when I first visited +/- 30 years ago. Not uncommon…

List of lists Part Two

List of lists Part Two

Types of canal boats: Hire Boats. Distinguished by a company name and phone number prominently painted on. They tend to be shiny and new and have multigenerational families on board. And scrape marks from the drivers’ learning curve…. Live aboard. May be moored permanently. Often showing signs of Alaska syndrome I.e. “Let’s hang on to this; it might be useful some day. Plenty of room on the roof!” Older boats look kinda funky and can show signs of disrepair. Owner…

C’mon, England….really?! (Paula)

C’mon, England….really?! (Paula)

In so many ways, you have enriched the world: The Magna Carta, the Industrial Revolution, Thomas The Tank Engine.  So, what is so difficult about having both hot and cold water coming out of the same spigot? I know, I know. Historically hot and cold water systems came through unrelated plumbing parts in old buildings. But that was generations ago. And to this day, some people install separate hot and cold taps in new buildings. So, there you are in…

When your narrowboat has aspirations….

When your narrowboat has aspirations….

So, there I was alone on Pegotty. We were moored and Andrew had toddled off to view the locks we had planned to do tomorrow. He was Just about a city block away. I was playing a game, not focused on the outside. There is a fair amount of swaying involved as other boats go by. Sometimes boats get too close and thud into each other which could be bad news if these weren’t steel boxes. So I ignored the…

Thoughts from Paula

Have been enjoying Andrew’s blog posts but thought it time to add my tuppence. (See what I did there?) Life on Pegotty has affected my quotidian endeavors.  Much less time on line, basically no option to stream any videos, haven’t dealt with my phone in two weeks.  Not a big phone fan, it interesting that I even miss it a bit! What I do focus on:  where to get groceries, helping with mooring, dealing with the locks, trying to put…

Surrey Isn’t Just a Street in San Francisco

Surrey Isn’t Just a Street in San Francisco

Uneventful flight on Norwegian Airlines.  We sprung for “Premium” seats and the extra room was marvelous.  And they actually served real food. Dinner and breakfast. Currently in a Hampton Hotel near Gatwick.  Took a walk yesterday through some horse pastures to the border of Surrey.
