Happy Birthday to Me
Yesterday was my birthday, so we went out to dinner, and I did not get the blog written. Today, however, I got hold of the latest book in the Rivers of London series so there is nothing to write about unless you like book reviews. Anyhow, here are some of yesterday’s pictures from the Jardin de Balata, a botanic garden. They have a great collection of bromeliads, palm trees, and bamboo.
I’m not sure what the flower below is…
… but the purple throated carib hummingbirds love them.
One of the best things about the garden was the setting, up in the volcanic hills covered with rain forest.
On the way out we caught sight of another hummer, the tiny punk-looking antillean crested hummingbird.
On the way down the hill we stopped to visit an interesting domed church.
The church was open.
We went to Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique. However, all the cultural buildings there were closed, so you are only going to get outside shots of the library…
… and the cathedral.
In the central district the streets are narrow and the parking regulations incomprhensible.
There are some nice murals.
After we went in the pool today Paula hung her swimsuit up to dry, and this lizard came by to have a drink from the water dripping off it.

Loving all the photos. Seems like you’re having a great time.
The flower is commonly called torch ginger. The scientific name is Etlingera elatior.
Thanks
Also, I empathize with your Internet speed issues.
Happy Belated Birthday to you!
I’m enjoying your trip vicariously: thanks for all the great photos. The botanic garden, the buildings, the sea life, and the places you stay. I feel connected to you both through this blog.
