Hatton Locks
Today we came down twenty three locks to reach Leamington Spa. Tomorrow we start going up again. Look, Leamington, this is not good enough. You are too low down. If you can jack up the whole town about fifty feet, fill in with soil and dig a tunnel for the Leam and Avon Rivers we wouldn’t have to do so many locks.
We shared the locks with a boat called Abigail. The couple on board decided we were not working hard enough and called their son to come and help. He’s a back end web developer who is based in Birmingham.
These locks were built alongside an older flight of single wide locks, which have been converted into side weirs.
This are nice well behaved side weirs that don’t push you off course when you are trying to get into the lock.
Leamington is one of our favorite places to visit. The moorings are right next to a Co-op grocery store, there are a whole range of shopping options, and there are nice parks and an interesting art museum. Today we sat outside at a cafe with a view of the dancing elephant statue and pretended to be grownups. The waitress asked me if I wanted the gluten free brownie or the regular one. I told her I am entirely gluten tolerant and I wanted as much gluten as she could possibly cram into a brownie. I think she liked that as she warmed the brownie for me.
In the boat names department, someone had to do it.
We’re having dinner out tonight. There are lots of good restaurants in Leamington, too. Let’s hope I chose one.
