Kettle’s Yard and Old Friends
Kettle’s Yard was formerly the home of art collectors Jim and Helen Ede (pron EED). It was filled with art and found objects, and left to the university as a gallery. In keeping with it being a home, none of the art has labels, and you are welcome to sit on any of the seats. It’s a lovely collection. There are lots of boats and sailboats…
The rest of the day was meeting up with friends who some of whom I had not seen in years or decades, and others we had seen recently. There was a college reunion lunch, which was the original inspiration. for this trip to Cambridge, and then we met with our friends Kay and Bob from California who are joining us on the boat for a few days.
I took Kay and Bob punting on the Cam. My punting skills are still there, but the muscles aren’t. Our punt went quite a bit slower than some of the others. However, I didn’t hit anything, and as my sailing instructor used to say, if you go out, and come back again, and you haven’t hit anything, then you have won. When I worked on the student newspaper at Cambridge we once published a picture with the caption Cunning Punting Stunts in the hope that it sounded vaguely obscene. My, the fun we had.
